Apart from its functional features, the Astana Stadium is designed specifically for Astana City to be a symbolic building that reflects the modern and contemporary aspects of the new capital of Kazakhstan. Emerging from the vast landscape of Astana, located on the main road, which connects the city to the airport, the Stadium creates a symbolic link between people and country and Kazakhstan with the world.
The stadium, designed on an elliptic form, is constructed on a 232.485 mē (330m x 704.5m) rectangular site whereas the green area is 54.522 mē and hard landscaping is 66.236 mē. The total construction area is 56.135 mē. To realize the systems of construction, a structural analysis has been carried out by simulation technology.
The design introduces innovative solutions adopting high technology principles for operational management, interaction with the environment and especially with harsh climatic conditions of the geography. An operable roof system that functions independently from the fixed roof is programmed in order to protect the green area and provide eligible conditions for the spectators and players.
The stadium can be used for different sports and gathering purposes but it is mainly programmed as a soccer field, which will be covered with high quality artificial grass that fits the FIFA and UEFA criteria. In accordance with various needs the field will be covered with high-tech materials (i.e. pitch cover). The pitch area is (68m x 105m) 7.140 mē. Technology will solve the problem of a natural grass playing field turf of the highest international quality for soccer game; the stadium will be able to host every kind of multi-use event in the same stadium without deterioration of the performing surfaces.
Align with the elliptical outer form; the circulation line creates dynamic and peaceful areas. Entering and leaving the stadium, people will be able to walk in or out, via a safe and secure path and spectators will be welcomed and discharged via 24 separate portals around the stadium. 30 thousand people can enter and exit at the same time.
Car parks and service roads for 1411 cars are planned on 71.650 mē, outside of these secure spaces where, in unison, the ticket offices are located. In addition to the parking capacity, a 9.000 mē VIP and media car park is secured behind the west wing. The arrangement of appropriate operating spaces outside the Stadium will present additional functions in sports building operations.
The sliding roof is an integral part of the structure of the stadium. When it is closed, it converts the stadium into a covered arena; whether closed or open, the roof is an elementary part of the whole. The elliptical geometry reveals itself on the weatherproof roof shell. The main bearing construction of the roof is steel. Two main beams in east-west direction carry the metal-coated shell. The operable roof itself has a steel construction. The design refined to optimize strength and stiffness. The roof shifts on the east-west direction above the steel construction elements. The majestic motions of the cantilevered roof structure, two shields sliding toward each other to meet in the middle of the bowl structure create a spectacular effect. Polycarbonate elements cover the moving part of the roof for benefiting natural light when the roof is closed; besides light transmittance, the membrane material is also good at deformation resistance, impact resistance, sound absorption and natural ventilation.
The rectangular opening is as big as the soccer field. The extended wings of the roof, as an integral function of the moving roof and a fundamental part of an efficient roof structure, allow up to 30,000 people to have a direct experience of the games at every angle of the four grandstands; the stand installations are built with optimal viewing positions. The stadium bowl links the stands with the surrounding landscape to form open and clear accessibility. The spatial effect of the stadium creates a surrounding sense, in the stadium, the spectator feels surrounded by the outdoor and the immense sky.
The stadium is conceived as a two tiered solution with exclusive areas incorporated within. All tiered seats have an unobstructed view. Lower stands with 16,000 seating capacity surrounding all four sides of the stadium spread over 9.717 mē and the upper stands with 14,000 seating capacity are placed only on the east and west sides cover 5.270 mē.
Each spectator’s platform has its separate stairways; the vertical scale of the facility, the positioning and the height of vertical transportation provide easier access to the roads around the stadium. The circulation is maintained by platforms on 5.50 level. Six separate zones, behind the different levels of the stand areas, are spared as concourse that open to food kiosks, restaurants and sufficient number of restrooms.
Reasonable division of ground and underground levels will enable effective separation of people to ensure smooth access for various categories of people without interference with each other. Players, referees, VIP people and media members arrive at the stands from the west side at 0.00 level. Next to the Presidential Suit, 16 VIP suits, each for 12 people, are located on the west side of the stadium on 316 mē; on the 10.00 level between the upper and lower stand area; spectators arrive the stands from the lobby on the 0.00 level by lifts. Media members section, the main control room, TV broadcasting room, restaurants, bar, wc’s and VIP hall are on the same section, on the west wing. Functioning like an arcade or a concourse, the lobby is a covered urban space with restaurants and stores that invite visitors to stroll around. The VIP car park is located on the 0.00 level. Behind the media zone, adjacent to the west block, infrastructure will be available for broadcasting facilities and vehicles.
Closed area below the stands is 31.266 mē, where presidential suit, VIP suits, a restaurant, food & beverage and merchandising kiosks, restrooms, management offices, central control unit, police rooms, 4 player dressing rooms each designed for 24 people, referee dressing room designed for 4 people, room for 3 game delegates, doping test room, 2 warm-up areas, a flash interview room, a press conference room with a capacity of 100 people, media room for 200 people, photographers room, TV studios, wrestling & boxing saloon and corridors.
The arrangement of the bowl structural grid has been chosen to allow a significant amount of repetition in the design and construction of the stadium, and offer reasonable column spacing. The structural elements mutually support each other and converge into a grid-like formation, in which faįades, stairs and roof are integrated. Visitors walk through this formation and enter the spacious ambulatory that runs around the stands.
A concrete structure is proposed to provide an economical yet durable structure with good resistance against weather conditions. The stands will be prefabricated concrete. The reinforced concrete surfaces will be kept as solid concrete. Main structure of the areas below the stands is reinforced concrete; the closed areas below the stands and the main structure of the stands are reinforced concrete. Durable, strong, easily cleaned and aesthetical materials will be used as floor, wall and ceiling coverings, the material require minimal maintenance. Natural stone will be another choice of material for the VIP and Presidential Suits, connecting corridors and the other areas around this zone, like the restrooms.
The 2.426 mē secure area between the heated green area and the stands will be covered with solid, non-slippery material. The spectators who enter the secure area around the stadium can reach to the stands on north, south and east side by ramps.
The concrete surfaces that are the main structure material will not be coated on north-south direction and will be left as solid concrete surfaces. On the east-west direction, the sloped main reinforced concrete structure located above the 14.50 level is partly coated with aluminum profile elements. The same coating system will also be applied on the west side, on the same level. Additionally, both facades of the VIP level and the entrances on 0.00 level will be coated with aluminum curtain wall profiles.
The stadium is conceived as a large fortress, which makes a distinctive and unmistakable impression both when it is seen from a distance and from close up; it will constitute a charming urban landscape and become a new scene in Astana tallying with the synergy of sports, games, hospitality, nature and contemporary architecture.
